A Sad Note and Celebration Day 3

Hi everyone - I'm feeling glum right now because someone left me a horrible comment on my blog. It was about the Stuff To Scrap blog train. Here is what the commenter (who hid behind 'anonymous') wrote:

Christmas is on Dec 25 - why would you enter a blog train and take it out early??? What a shame! I have purchased many items from different bloggers as I collected the pieces - I will NEVER buy from someone like you

The Stuff To Scrap blog train has always been officially running from the 1st until the 15th. Some people leave their links up, but the train is over on the 15th. My links came down around the 20th - which is not actually pulling the freebie down early, it is leaving it up longer than necessary. This was never a Christmas train, it was just our monthly blog train that had a Christmas theme this month.

I do at least one free FULL kit per month on my blog and usually I also do the Stuff To Scrap blog train which is a mini kit. Many designers no longer give free kits once they start selling in a store, because they feel it hurts their sales. The chatter in designer forums is to give 'samplers' from kits. However, I am a scrapper too, and it wasn't that long ago that I was looking for freebies too. I found samplers to be really hard to use because ... well ... there isn't enough stuff! So I decided one free kit - a good kit too, not just something I pump out as fast as I can because its free - each month would be how I would still give to people who can't afford to buy, give a useful kit, and still have kits that go straight to the store for sales.

I recently was participating in a designer discussion about freebies, where several designers gave up on regular freebies because people would get upset if they weren't posted long enough, or if they were late posting them, or other things that freebie hunters found 'unfair' about the posting. If I was getting regular rude comments like today's I think I would give up on freebies too.

I am happy to say that most of you are great! Some post nice thank you's and I feel very appreciated by you. Many of you just download and go (you know who you are!) and I would like to encourage you to comment - not just for me, but for all the designers who are giving you freebies...if you haven't tried your hand at designing, maybe give it a go so you can see how many hours of work it takes to make a kit. Then you'll understand why its a drag to see several hundred people have taken your freebie and only 10% or so say thank you. However, even a download without comment is better than the attitude of entitlement shown by anonymous today. It completely took the wind out of my sails, and I am not really feeling enthusiastic about anything.

Here is today's download link. It is to the elements of the kit. I'll post more CT layouts tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

*download expired*

Don't forget to swing by Shel Belles blog too, for her elements.

I hope I can be the first of many to say that you are great and don't need to justify yourself to someone like that! We all appreciate your talent and kindness in giving us pieces of your talent that you really don't have to but do out of the kindness of your heart. Thank you for what you do. It's a shame that the negative comments stick harder than the kind...even though they are fewer.

As a new digital scrapper I would like to say thank you!! I can appreciate all the work that goes into making a kit since I can barely figure out how to make a layout. I love that you and other designers give out free kits so I can practice without have to put out so much money to see if I like it. I will definitely be buying some kits once I get the basics down.
Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing with the rest of us!!

First, THANK YOU for the free kits you do. I know that you spend a lot of time on them and I appreciate them (even if I sometimes forget to say thank you). It is a sad state that some people feel the world owes them, rather than being grateful for all the blessing they have recieved. Please don't let one idiot get you down, you are a wonderful designer and more than generous with your freebies!!!!! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and joyous New Year.

I would like to thank you for all the work you put into making the free kits. I just started digital scrapping and needed something to play around with until I figure out how to make layouts.
Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing with everyone!!!

jewel, keep doing what you're doing, sweetie!! keep your head up and remember, it's only one person that has a bad attitude and posted something like that.. there are many many more of us grateful people out there in digiland that do appriciate what you are doing!! :) thank you so much for everything that you do put out, free or not!! :) :) :)

Thank you ladies - that really helped! It is true that the unkind comments stick really hard - even if its only one of them it kinda makes you want to get up and run from the computer. But I won't! Thanks for taking the time to drop me pick-me-up notes:)

I'm so sorry that you had this happen to you! I appreciate all the hard work you put into your kits, and really appreciate that you so generously offer freebies. Hope you have a better day tomorrow and that your holidays are special!

You are such a dear to offer some of your kits for free. I know that I, for one, am truly grateful for your generosity. Thank you!

What a shame?! That comment is a shame. I could see why that would take the wind out of your sails. All I can say, as a complete stranger, is I'm SO SORRY! You don't deserve that. You are very generous to have free kits and other freebies at all. Don't listen to the stinkers! You are so generous! Thank you!

Arrrgggh! I'm sorry this happened to you. NO ONE has to give freebies, and if someone chooses to do so... then the person receiving the freebies should be THANKFUL! BIG HUGS and poo poo on the meanies!! LOL

Merry Christmas!

Thank you SO much for sharing your freebie kits--you do great work and as a beginning digi-scrapper I really appreciate the work of others like yourself. This is another versatile kit!

I'm so sorry that someone would say something so horrible to someone who is giving away lovely freebies that don't have to be given away. Know that we all love you & appreciate the great products that you give to us!

Shelley said...

Jewel, This kit is beautiful! I especially like the patterned papers and I am dreaming of where to put them to use. I apologize for being one of those who (frequently) grabs the freebie and runs - usually on to the next one in the blog train. But what you create for us is truly inspiring. Keep up the good work.

Judith said...

I'm sorry somebody was so rude. I'm a freebie collecter. If a freebie is up only 24 hours then I'm fine with that. Thank you for all your work.

NanaScraps said...

I have tried to design my own kits....it is hard and tedious work and very very time consuming (although fun)...I always try to leave a comment to say thank you...common courtesy....I snag the freebies but I also try to buy from some of the stores and if I miss a piece or two along the way I'll by the kit if it is a positively must have....I am very grateful for all the designers who are generous with their time and talent for with out them I would not be able to scrap all my grand babies pictures (which I love to do) thanks for all you do and don't pay attention to those who have nothing better to do then berate someone else

Melanie said...

So sorry that someone had to complain about potentially getting something for free. I appreciate all of the hard work you do and share with us. Thanks!

Just wanted to let you know that this grateful "anonymous" says "Thank you " ,"Thank You", for sharing your talent and allowing someone like me to use your wonderful kits to preserve photos of my family. You are so talented and it is sad that someone would be so rude, especially when you generously provide these kits. Thank you again and please don't be discouraged.

Really...what is wrong with people! I swear, people feel so entitled! I know how comments like that make you feel like you were kicked in stomache. Hang in there...we all love you!

what a Blankity blank!!! I am so sorry for the rude comment that you got-you would think they would at least have to umph to let you know who they are-BUGS!!! Anyway your kits are FABULOUSO!!! You are very talented and THANK YOU for sharing those talents with the rest of us!!! Hope your day gets better and you have a wonderful holiday season:)

Thanks for posting the lovely elements for Celebration. I read your post today and I was upset about that comment as well. I mean seriously, who do these people think they are to post something like that and not even consider what it takes to create these kits and give them away free. You designers are FANTASTIC for sharing your gift of these kits with us. And, I may say Stuff to Scrap is a "very" inexpensive store to buy your kits from. All I can say is I appreciate each and everyone of the designers for all the work it takes make these kits. I can't make a kit to save my life at this point, I'm having a hard enough time trying to figure out PSE so I can at least re-color elements or papers. Don't let this ruin your day...it's not worth it and you get more positive feedback from us anyway. Hugs!! (terri - hawaii)

What a pitiful person "anonymous" must be to live such an ungrateful, entitled, small life. A person like that could never brighten the lives of others with the creativity and generosity that you, and so many other designers kindly share with us. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

I agree with everyone here, that was a terrible comment to leave. I admit I dont always take the time to say thank you, but I am so grateful for people like you - your work is amazing, if it wasnt I wouldnt keep comming back for more. Thank you heaps for all your hard work and dont take to heart what that rotten so n so says! Love your work and your blog. THANK YOU for all you do!!

I usually comment on 4shared and it is usually just a thank you but I had to comment after reading about the message left by anonymous. I myself have missed out on parts of trains and pieces of collabs because of one problem or another but I would never leave a rude comment or even think twice about it because I feel that it is something I am getting for free. I myself made a kit once and even have a blog and I can tell you it is alot harder than some people may think. I have more or less given up on being a scrap kit maker for now but I still have my blog just in case and I ever figure out sizing and stuff I will try it again. So I want to say Thank You once again. If you get the time check out my half_axx blog and see what I posted along time ago about people not saying thank you.

Laura said...

What a bummer that someone would be so rude to complain about a freebie! Thank you for your generosity. Also, sometimes I try to leave comments--but I'm not always successful. Is there a blog/Q&A somewhere on all the lingo (blinkies? SAHM?, etc.) and "how to" on comment leaving? Merry Christmas!

makeyesup said...

Try not to let negative comments get you down. They are not worth the energy it takes to even think about them. You are appreciated for what you do in sharing your talent. And if any one of us misses something, oh well, that's life. Put a smile on your face and love in your heart as that is the way to feel. Don't let this fester and put a damper in enjoying family and friend in the wonder season of Christ.
Almost forgot to say thanks for the elements today.

Wow! That's awful!!! I want you to know how much I truly appreciate all you do! Your talent is incredible, and you do so much!!! I hope you get many more kind words!!

Wow, some people really suck! You are great for doing these free kits and certainly under no obligation to do so. I am very grateful that people like you take the time to do this, it is so fun to be able to go "freebie hunting," but it's a gift to us! Thank you very much and happy holidays!

Anonymous said...

I think it is wonderful that you give out freebies. I know a lot of the designers are giving out daily downloads for the holidays-I missed some of the days last week when my dad was in ICU. But I can't imagine leaving nasty notes for someone!

Thanks for what you do for us.

Anonymous said...

Yes, that is really sad. I can also appreciate the work done by the designers, I'm struggling just to put a page together with all the great kits!!! Everyone is so creative and talented. I can't believe that someone would post something, I appreciate everything out they are so generously willing to share with the world, even if it's only up a day and I miss it! I hope all our positive comments will over shadow that inconsiderate person and help brighten your day.
Thank you for all you do, sharing your talent and time.
Happy Holidays
Elizabeth (don't know how to choose an identity, it never works for me!)

Gah! That's what I say to the person who left you vinegar instead of honey. Designing is not only time-consuming, but can be expensive! Thank you for your giving spirit. Free kits have sustained me through an unemployed, unhappy year. Sometimes scrapping was the only thing I could do for me. Bravo to you for all that you do. (and bravo to your parents for raising you correctly!)

Thanks for such a beautiful kit!

Thanks so much for the freebie and I'm sorry someone left that comment. Maybe they should read things before just blasting you for something that wasn't even true.

I am so sorry that someone with the crass and lack of morals/values was so rude to you. You are a wonderful designer and the person that left that horrible comment, is a free loader and may Santa run over her and leave little hoof marks all over her back...LOL...

A freebie is a gift from the designer, and it's always sad to see people forget their manners! I want to say thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Don't let a loser like that get you down- they were probably just frustrated they waited too long to download the train. Merry Christmas!! :0)

Debbi said...

Hi! First of all, anonymous negative comments are not worth your time to even read. I've gotten nasty anonymous notes before in a job I've had, and if the person doesn't sign their name, then what they have to say is not very credible. Secondly, you are giving away freebies. Contrary to what some seem to believe, if you are giving away something free, you don't actually OWE anyone anything. It's a gift. A very generous one. Thank you for your freebies. I just found your blog, but I will be back. I love freebies, and although I use a lot of them, I frequently do end up coming back and buying something from some of the designers, so they do work as an advertisement. Have a merry Christmas!

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful kit with me.I LOVE it!
As for anonymous and her rude note...I have a question...where was SHE when you had the kit up? Why would it be YOUR fault that SHE missed your kit? I have missed kits before by not being on time to get them.I had wished the designers had kept them up longer...but..it wasn't their fault that I wasn't paying attention.Right? :)
Don't take this to heart. You have the rules..she didn't follow them.:)

Merry CHRISTmas!!
Huge hugs,
Valinda

Thank you for everything you do for the digital community. Please don't ever let one miserable person drag you into their sad state, especially when they are misinformed. You can't make everyone happy, but you can rest assured that there are so many more of us across the globe that appreciate you. Merry Christmas!

Hey Jewel there are lots of MGD files on my computer that I have downloaded for free and feel very appreciative for your hard work and generosity. Even when I don't say thanks the fact that I keep following your blog is my way of showing my support (although you're right that a quick thanks would not be too much to ask)! Keep in mind that Anonymous's comment has nothing to do with you or your work and everything to do with that person and his/her life. Besides, it's just bad karma to pass around hurtfulness, isn't it??? Keep doing what you do and, by the number of positive comments I see in response to your post, I think you have many, many appreciative and thoughtful followers!!

I love your kits! I know it's easier said than done, but don't let 1 raunchy comment get to you. It doesn't matter what you do - someone will always find a way to be offended. And that's their problem - not yours!
You're a great designer & I'm really grateful for all of your free kits! Thank you!

Oh. brother. Give me a break. What audacity! I can't believe someone would write that -- and speaking of Christmas... why would someone write that, period, much less this close to Chrismas?!?! Absolutely ridiculous.

...On another note, thanks for everything!

Please try to let it go!! Big Hug. vicki

I'm so sorry someone was rude like that. It's truly uncalled for. I appreciate the work that goes into a kit since I recently started designing for myself. I appreciate all the hard work and time. I appreciate it even more when I realize how much creativity it requires month after month. THANK YOU!

People can be such idiots! If they don't like it, they can make it themselves! I love the freebies that so many designers give us. You don't have to give anything away, it's your hard work. Please know that many of us do appreciate that you give your designs away. You have the right to make some of money off of your time and effort, I certainly don't begrudge designers that. I have bought from some marvelous designers when I have the money.

Hugs, and happy holidays!

Sometimes I can't believe people! I am sorry that one rotten person had to be so nasty to you. Although I may not always remember to say "thank you" I very much appreciate all of your hard work! And as fair as things being "fair" or "unfair"... My attitude is that they are freebies that the designer is generous enough to give away, they don't have to do that. So even if a day is missed, it's MY fault, not the designers. All of you are awesome at explaining the time frames that stuff is available. I've never found something being taken down early. And, whenever something's been posted "late" (hey, you all are real people too with your own lives, schedules and responsibilities so it's totally understandable that you may get something up "late") the designer has ALWAYS given plenty of extra time to download the item. And, to put in my 2 cents about designers who sell and still give freebies (not just samplers)... When I'm trying to decide if I want to purchase from a new designer, I ALWAYS look to see if I can find a freebie kit (even a mini is great)so I know what to expect. I've purchased stuff before without doing that and been disappointed in what I got. My current stash (I have around 500GB) is about 50/50 in freebies and purchases. Thanks so much for all of your HARD work. I appreciate your generousity!

Clearly that person didn't read the details about the blog train. When they stumble across the fact that it only had to be up until the 15th they will probably be embarrassed and to ashamed to write back to apologize.

I am getting caught up on my blog reading and was very sad to read your post. I am hearing more and more about folks being rude and feeling entitled to freebies, and it's a shame. Designers such as yourself should be greatly appreciated for sharing so much out of the goodness of your heart. There are very few industries where you will find such generosity without strings attached. I am not a regular to your blog (I came from Shel Belle's blog), but please know that I appreciate you sharing your work on this kit! Thank you and Happy Holidays!!!

Good for you girl... speak your mind! Bug off to those ungrateful people. I too have had rude comments on my blog and it has just made blogging a dreaded task. It shouldnt be that way. I always try to leave a comment on the blog or at 4shared for all designers. It is the least that should be done by EVERYONE. I really dont see people being this rude when given free things in stores and such so I have yet to understand why it is acceptable to do so on a blog.

Regardless, ignore it. That person is probably an unhappy person with no life that must find amusement by hurting others. Be strong and move on.

<3 ya girl!
